Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this club for?
This club is designed for homeschool learners who want to build confidence, communication skills, and critical thinking. No prior debate or public speaking experience is required. We offer two sections: ages 8–11 and 12–15.
Does my child need debate experience?
No. This is an introductory club. Learners are guided step-by-step and supported at their own pace. Many students start out shy or unsure and gain confidence over time through regular practice.
How is this different from a one-time class?
Consistency is key. This club is designed to meet weekly with a small, steady group of learners. Over time, students build stronger skills, deeper confidence, and real connections with their peers. The topics change weekly, but the structure remains the same. This allows them to get comfortable in the class, but while also being challenged with new debates each week.
Is this class competitive?
No. This club focuses on skill-building, confidence, and respectful discussion. Learners are not pressured to “win” debates. For families interested in competition, this club serves as an introduction to our Homeschool Debate League.
What happens during a typical class?
Each class starts with an impromptu speech. Learners are given a “would you rather” style question, a couple of minutes to prepare their thoughts, and then give a short speech to the class. The more often they do this, the better they get at communicating without time to prepare, and it also helps them understand how to structure a speech.
Then, we move into the debate where learners are guided to practice sharing ideas, listening to others, and responding thoughtfully. The debates are age-appropriate but also discuss real-world topics.
Learners are given the topic and a Topic Guide a week in advance. Prep work isn’t required, but reviewing the Topic Guide is encouraged so we can spend more time on the debate and less time understanding the topic.
Can we start or stop at any time?
Yes. Families may start or stop at any point. While there is no long-term commitment, learners who attend consistently experience the greatest growth and benefit most from the community aspect of the club. Note that you are charged one week prior to class to save your seat for the following week.
How many learners are in each class?
Class sizes are kept small to ensure every learner has opportunities to speak and receive individual feedback. The max number of learners per class is 8.
How is the class delivered?
Classes meet live on Zoom once a week for 55 minutes. Learners participate with their camera and microphone on to fully engage in discussions.
What kind of topics are debated and discussed?
We discuss and debate real-world topics on an age-appropriate level.
Examples of topics:
- Should we ban plastic-bottled water?
- Are zoos ethical?
- Should food be free?
Here’s an example of a Topic Guide.
Note that we have vetted all topics with thousands of learners to ensure that not only do they understand it, but they also enjoy debating it. We’ve had some parents reach out concerned that the topics were too advanced before joining the class, but they were surprised to see that their learner had real and valid ideas about it. However, if this isn’t the right fit for your learner, we also offer a Beginner Debate Club that focuses on things like: “which is the best season”, “do dogs make better pets than cats”, etc.
How much does it cost?
The cost is $24 per week for a live, 55-minute small-group class.
What skills will my child gain?
Learners build confidence in speaking, improve critical thinking, learn to organize ideas, listen respectfully, and express disagreement thoughtfully. These skills support academic success and everyday communication.
